Switched Light Wiring Diagram

The white wire carries line the black wire carries the switched line.
Switched light wiring diagram. Wiring diagram shows how the electrical power enters the ceiling light electrical box and then a two conductor cable is installed to the switch without a neutral conductor. Switched light wiring diagram wiring diagram is a simplified usual pictorial representation of an electrical circuit. Fixture wiring exits the switch box. Switch wiring shows the power source power in starts at the switch box.
This diagram illustrates wiring for one switch to control 2 or more lights. The source is at sw1 and 2 wire cable runs from there to the fixtures. Since the white wire is hot a black piece of electrical tape is placed on each end. The white wire is commonly used as the line down to the switch and must be re indentified with a different color to indicate that.
Circuit electrical wiring enters the switch box. Whether you have power coming in through the switch or from the lights these switch wiring diagrams will show you the light. The black wire power in source attaches to one of the switch screw terminals. This alternate type of wiring is no longer allowed by the nec as of 2011 if a neutral wire is not present inside each switch box.
The black wire power out wiring attaches to the other switch screw terminal. The hot and neutral terminals on each fixture are spliced with a pigtail to the circuit wires which then continue on to the next light. In the diagram below right a 2 wire nm cable that connects the light fixture to the switch carries 2 line wires one line and one switched line.
